Recommendations Vs. Rates
WHO (World Health Organization) and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) strongly recommend exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months of life. However, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) 2014 Breastfeeding Report Card reveals that although 93% of California's mothers attempt to breastfeed initially, only 25% are currently reaching the 6 month milestone for exclusive breastfeeding.
Additionally, AAP guidelines recommend continued breastfeeding to at least 12 months of age, while WHO advises breastfeeding up to two years and beyond. Currently, only 38% of California's mothers are achieving AAP's breastfeeding guidelines at one year.
Although the majority of mothers intend to breastfeed their babies, a small minority are getting the support they need.
At milk we believe that every family deserves the right to feed their infants and toddlers as they instinctively choose. By providing a connection to lactation education and resources, we strive to help more families find the support they need to reach their breastfeeding goals.
